Tortoise Island
A ring of islands in the sea.

Seychelles is a country of islands in the Indian Ocean. A ring of small islands there is called Aldabra. Giant tortoises live on Aldabra.

Scientists think about 183,000 tortoises live there. That is more than the people in Seychelles. About 123,000 people live in the whole country.

Long ago, people took too many tortoises. Fewer than 1,000 were left. Then Aldabra became a nature park in 1981. In 2012, people removed goats from the island. Today the tortoises are safe.
