Mediators Work to Stop US-Iran Fighting Near a Key Sea Route

Ships were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz this week, while Qatar and others push for a deal.

📍 Strait of Hormuz · Iran, Oman

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea passage next to Iran, and oil tankers sail through it. This week it became dangerous. A group that tracks ships said at least 11 were attacked in and around it in the week ending 6 November. Three sank.

The fighting is part of a war between Iran and the United States and Israel that began on 28 February. On Friday night, two projectiles hit Qeshm island in Iran. President Trump called them “minor strikes”. About 65 percent fewer ships cross the strait than before the war.

Other countries are trying to help the two sides talk. Iran’s foreign minister spoke with 12 foreign ministers in 48 hours, including those of Oman, Qatar and Pakistan. Qatar’s prime minister said the US and Iran should not wait for a “perfect moment” to make a deal.

Israel Asks Gadi Eisenkot to Try to Form a Government

No one won enough seats alone, so parties must team up.

SEATS IN ISRAEL’S KNESSET Seats won, out of 120 (61 needed to govern)

Netanyahu’s coalition won 53 seats, Eisenkot’s four parties 48, two Arab parties 19.

In Israel, voters elect 120 members of parliament, called the Knesset. A government needs 61 of them to back it. After the 27 October election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, a group of parties working together, won only 53.

On Saturday, President Isaac Herzog asked Gadi Eisenkot, a former army chief, to try to build a government. Likud, Netanyahu’s party, won the most seats of any one party: 27.

Eisenkot has 28 days. If nobody succeeds, Israel votes again.
