Ukraine and Russia have been at war for more than four years. On Saturday 31 October, civilians from Oleshky, a town Russia controls, crossed into Ukraine under a truce, a short agreement to stop fighting. Reports call it the first humanitarian truce of its kind in the war.
The truce covered only the area around Oleshky and lasted six days. The White House said Melania Trump, the wife of the US president, helped to arrange it. About 2,000 people were still in the town when it began.
Four planes carried the evacuees to Gomel, in Belarus. From there they reached the border with Ukraine, in the Chernihiv region. Ukrainian officials said Russia's army provided safe routes and cleared mines from roads near Oleshky. The war went on elsewhere: a drone killed two people in Russia's Bryansk region, its governor said.
