A cyclone is a huge spinning storm that forms over warm sea water. Cyclone Arnab came ashore on Wednesday 28 October near Yanam, a town on the coast of Andhra Pradesh in south-eastern India. India's weather office called it a very severe cyclonic storm. Its core winds blew at 125 to 135 kilometres an hour.
Konaseema and West Godavari were hit hardest. In Konaseema alone, around 8,000 electricity poles fell, and power was cut in nearly 400 villages.
Arnab weakened on Wednesday afternoon, but floods followed in southern Odisha, the state to the north. There, over 100,000 people were evacuated. Ganjam was among the flood-hit districts.
Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, puts the early loss at Rs 4,600 crore, which could rise. He says at least seven people died.
