Oil Stays Above $114 While Attacks and Talks Go On in the Gulf

Saudi Arabia says it stopped more drones as three countries meet Iran's leaders.

Oil is the raw material for petrol and diesel, so its price ends up on the signs at filling stations. On Monday a barrel of Brent crude, the price many countries follow, closed at $115.81. Early on Tuesday it was $114.68.

Part of the reason is a fight in the Gulf region. The Houthis, an armed group in Yemen, keep attacking Saudi Arabia, which sells a great deal of oil. Saudi Arabia's allies said they destroyed three drones aimed at the capital, Riyadh, and southern areas on Monday.

There is also some diplomacy. On Monday, senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan met Iran's leaders in Tehran, and Iranian state media said they agreed to keep talking. Buyers are watching the Gulf closely.

World Europe

Europe's Living-Cost Anger Reaches Streets in Three Countries

Higher fuel and energy bills are behind protests from France to Portugal.

PRICES CLIMB Rise in a year, in percent

UK: year to September (ONS, via ITV). France: September (INSEE).

Prices for fuel and energy have climbed across Europe, and last weekend people took to the streets. In France, the unrest led to 2,400 arrests, and President Emmanuel Macron said the protesters' demands were legitimate while condemning violence and looting.

The protests were not only in France. In Milan, in Italy, police clashed with protesters angry about public services and rising living costs. In Portugal, thousands marched against high housing costs.

The European Commission estimates the Iran conflict has cost Europe about 100 billion euros through disrupted trade and energy markets. It also says gas prices have jumped about 140% and diesel prices have doubled.

Fuel is part of the cost of moving almost everything by road, so a rise at the pump can show up in other prices too.

United States Elections

More Than 30 Million Americans Have Already Voted

A week before the midterms, early voting is running strongly.

The United States holds midterm elections on 3 November, halfway through a president's term, to choose members of Congress. Many people do not wait for that day. They vote early, by post or in person.

With a week to go, more than 30 million Americans have already voted, according to election trackers. In Louisiana, early voting ends on Tuesday, and more than 363,000 people have cast ballots there.

Early totals show how many people are taking part. They do not show who is winning, so the real result will come after election day.

If petrol costs more, what else might cost more too, and why?

Why do you think authorities in India move people to shelters before a storm arrives, not after?

Early voting lets people vote before election day. Why might a country offer more than one day to vote?

Families on India's East Coast Move to Shelters Before Arnab

A very severe cyclone is due to arrive in the small hours of Wednesday.

Imagine being told to leave your home before a storm. For more than 114,000 people in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, on India's east coast, that happened on Tuesday. They were moved from low-lying coastal districts to shelters.

The storm is Cyclone Arnab, a very severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. India's weather office expects it to cross the coast between 2 am and 4 am on Wednesday, near Visakhapatnam. Gusts could reach 150 kilometres an hour.

Life on the coast has changed for a few days. Odisha closed schools in 16 of its 30 districts, and at least 50 trains and 21 flights were cancelled. In Andhra Pradesh, 1,351 pregnant women were taken to hospitals as a precaution. Andhra Pradesh also set up 1,087 medical teams and 1,274 ambulances.
