Saudi Arabia is in a fight with the Houthis, a group that controls Sanaa and parts of north-west Yemen. Yemen is the country just south of Saudi Arabia. A truce set up by the United Nations in 2022 mostly held for years. It has now collapsed.

The Houthi leader calls the attacks tit-for-tat. He says the policy is “airports for airports, ports for ports.” That came after Sanaa’s airport was hit. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government says that strike aimed to stop an Iranian plane from landing there.

Saudi aviation officials counted at least 20 deaths and 356 injuries at airports between October 6 and 11. The worst strike hit Riyadh’s main airport on October 10 and killed at least 12 people. On Wednesday, the Saudi-led coalition said it stopped a missile fired toward Riyadh.

Attacks on Ships Keep Oil Above $100

A barrel of Brent crude cost about $108 on Friday, one report said.

OIL PRICES, OCTOBER 16 US dollars a barrel

One market report put Brent at $107.83 and WTI at $97.07.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea passage next to Iran. Oil tankers from many countries sail through it. In late February the United States and Israel attacked Iran, and the strait was closed, according to one report.

Iran has since attacked tankers there. UK officials reported at least nine attacks in October alone. Brent crude, a standard measure of oil prices, hit $110 a barrel at one point. When oil is harder to move, it costs more.

On Friday, one market report put Brent at about $108 and US oil, called WTI, at about $97. Yahoo Finance reported that global fuel prices began climbing in the spring after the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February.

United States Prices

US Prices Rose 3.7% in a Year, Led by Petrol

The report came about three weeks before the November 3 elections.

Inflation is how fast prices rise. On October 14, the US Labor Department said consumer prices in September were 3.7% higher than a year earlier. In August the figure was 3.4%.

Gasoline, which Americans call gas, was the main driver. Prices also rose 0.6% from August to September, the biggest monthly gain in five months. Prices for things other than food and energy rose 2.6% over the year, up from 2.4%.

The central bank, called the Federal Reserve, meets on October 27 and 28. Higher inflation puts more pressure on it to raise its key interest rate.

Delhi Ends Jantar Mantar as a Protest Site

Police named three new places where protests may be held.

Jantar Mantar is a well-known spot in New Delhi where people have gathered to protest. A Delhi Police order dated October 11 says it is no longer a protest site. The order names Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi instead.

The order says it follows advice from a committee set up by the Home Ministry. The Indian Youth Congress president, Uday Bhanu Chib, has asked the Delhi High Court to overturn the change. Police told the court the decision was based on a Supreme Court order of October 9.

The change came as protests over voter lists grew. The Supreme Court has linked a petition by opposition leaders about the voter-list revision to another case. Both are due to be heard on October 27.

Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party, a protest group, were detained near Jantar Mantar after trying to enter the site.
