Football and Tennis Moved as Missiles Keep Flying

Saudi Arabia says it stopped a missile aimed at its capital on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia is fighting a war with the Houthis, a group in Yemen. Yemen is the country just south of Saudi Arabia. On Wednesday, the Houthis said they hit an Aramco site in Dhahran. Aramco is Saudi Arabia’s giant oil company. A Saudi official said a building was hit and nobody was hurt.

On Thursday, Saudi-backed forces said they stopped a drone heading for the city of Medina and a missile fired toward Riyadh, the capital. Last weekend, attacks on Riyadh’s airport reportedly killed 14 people. It is expected to stay shut until Saturday.

The war is changing daily life. The Saudi football league moved three games. Cristiano Ronaldo’s team, Al Nassr, now plays its match in March 2027. A big tennis event in Riyadh moved to December.

Why it matters

When airports and oil sites are hit, people far from Yemen can feel it, and families in the war zone can run short of food.
