The World Reacts to the Riyadh Airport Attack

Leaders in many countries say the strike on a busy airport was wrong. Saudi Arabia calls it a war crime.

Last Saturday, a missile hit the main airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia says at least 12 people died and about 300 were hurt. It was the third attack on that airport in one week. People from eight countries were among the dead and hurt.

Many countries have spoken out. The United Nations leader, Antonio Guterres, said he was "deeply shocked". The attackers are the Houthis, a rebel group from Yemen that gets help from Iran. India, Japan, Canada and Malaysia also condemned the attack, which means they said it was wrong.

President Trump called it "terrible" and said the United States is thinking about joining Saudi Arabia against the Houthis. Saudi Arabia called the attack a war crime and promised to answer it. Saudi Arabia also kept its airport closed for longer while the Houthis threatened more attacks.

Why it matters

An airport is where people from many countries meet. That is why so many leaders have spoken up.
