Leaders Condemn Riyadh Airport Attack

It was the third strike on the airport in one week. Saudi Arabia calls it a war crime.

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia. Its main airport, King Khalid International, was hit three times in a week. On Thursday, a missile attack killed an airline pilot and two other Saudis. The deadliest strike came on Saturday: Saudi Arabia says at least 12 people died and about 300 were wounded.

The attacks are blamed on the Houthis, a group from Yemen that gets help from Iran. The dead and wounded came from many countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and the United States.

Leaders around the world have condemned the attack, which means they said it was wrong. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply shocked". President Trump called it "terrible" and said the United States is weighing whether to join the campaign against the Houthis. Saudi Arabia called it a war crime.

Why it matters

An airport links people from many countries, so an attack on one worries many governments at once. The fighting in Yemen is no longer far from Saudi Arabia's biggest cities.
